My husband is a realtor we have seen better days in the real estate market but we are still very fortunate in Texas to have a strong economy that’s braving the winds of foreclosures and empty homes.

However my husband Brian has seen the newest trend of home building as a HUGE benefit to customers and future home builders that want to save money long term and even live healthier. Understanding it all (meaning the definitions of green to the builders) is a bit much for me but he often mentions the types of building materials, cements and paints and other compliances that make the home much more energy efficient and even safer to live.

I have seen the GREEN trend take off over the past few weeks in the news and other media. But I am concerned about the long term benefits of owning an energy efficient home when most of them will have a CHEMISTRY LAB under the cabinets and closets.

The average home has more the sixty two different types of household cleaning and consumables products that contain chemicals and toxins that emit in the air of the home. The average home can be anywhere for 50 to 70 times more toxic than the air outside. What is the air quality going to be like in NEW GREEN, well insulated homes that are energy efficient and air tight? Stuffy, to say the least but I am truly concerned about the air breathed by the families in these NEW GREEN homes.

If you or someone you know are considering the great new trend of a Green HOME be sure that they are safe on the inside as well as on the outside.

TIPS:
• Avoid bringing chlorine bleach into the home to wash or clean with.
• Be sure to avoid using many different scented air fresheners
• Avoid the use of plug ins
• Read the backs of spray and pesticides before using them in the home (especially around your children, if you have infants DON’T use can sprays at all if you can help it)
• Open window monthly to allow the house to breathe
• Consider the use of ONE product line for cleaning and washing in order to determine what works for you and your family.
